Stiff, painful, sore and clicking jaw joints, are extremely common conditions that can affect people of all ages and walks of life. These kinds of conditions are collectively known as Temporomandibular joint disorders or TMD’s for short.
Common symptoms of TMD’s include pain over one or both of the jaw joints, clicking and limited mouth opening. People with jaw joint problems often also report experiencing pain and/or difficulty with tasks such as talking, yawning, laughing and biting into and chewing hard foods.
The physical assessment and treatment of TMD’s is an evolving field of clinical expertise that is effective and complementary to other forms treatment, including splint therapy.
The differential diagnosis and treatment of TMD’s can be challenging, however with appropriate assessment and targeted treatment, physiotherapy can be an effective treatment option for many TMD’s.
