Musculoskeletal Injury

A musculoskeletal injury can happen to anyone. The most common form of injury is a sprain or strain of muscles, ligaments and tendons. However, other structures in the body can also be affected by a musculoskeletal injury. These include spinal discs, joints (cartilage tears), and bursae (fluid sac between tendons).

Musculoskeletal injury can happen as a result of lifting something incorrectly or having a fall. It may also be the result of a gradual loading on the body, often caused by poor posture.

Common muscular skeletal injuries are:

  • Lower back strain
  • Neck strain
  • Rotator Cuff tear (shoulder)
  • Twisted ankle
  • Twisted knee

Our physiotherapists will diagnose, treat and inform you about the type of injury you have sustained. They are experts in manual therapy, exercise prescription, ergonomics and the management of rehabilitation.

You can expect a quality service which will give you real answers on what to do about your injury.

Workplace Injury

Unfortunately, workplace injuries can happen as a result of poor work practices, an accident or just bad luck. At Beachbox Physiotherapy we are specialists in treating workplace injuries and helping you through the WorkSafe system. As authorized Occupational Physiotherapists, after we assess and treat your injury, we can follow up with:

  • Worksite assessments
  • Ergonomic advice
  • Negotiation upon which duties are appropriate
  • Recommendations of specialist equipment

Our physiotherapists will communicate with your general practitioner and we will provide therapy within the “work recommenced” clinical guidelines.

Sports Injuries

Sports injuries are a natural component of sport. They can occur as acute problems like a sprained ankle and a muscle strain, or the injuries could be longstanding chronic problems such as shin splints or lower back pain.

Sport and exercise, whilst healthy and essential to maintaining good health, does require body positions which create more load on specific joints and muscles.

As experienced musculoskeletal physiotherapists and experienced sports people we understand the demands of your sport, and how we can maximise your physical potential.

To remain injury free and competing at the highest level in your sport you may need a regular remedial program. Part of this program is a series of exercises and self assessments to ensure you are not developing an injury. We can work with your coaches by informing them of your injury status and the level to which you are able to compete.

At Beachbox Physiotherapy, we want you to continue enjoying your sport. Early assessment, treatment and management of your injury helps make this happen.

Vehicle/TAC Injuries

Being in a Motor Vehicle accident can have serious implications to the body. Most people recover quickly with minor aches and pains; however, some people may experience long lasting effects from a motor vehicle accident.

At Beachbox Physiotherapy, we will assess and treat your injuries to minimise any long lasting effects.

As part of the TAC’s commitment to early intervention and rehabilitation, the TAC waives the excess fee if you see an Authorized Occupational Physiotherapist.*

Adam Abbas is recognised as an Authorised Occupational Physiotherapist (*Cranbourne Clinic Only).

Providing your TAC claim is accepted, Beachbox Physiotherapy will bill the TAC directly for your rehabilitation and return to work support.

Acute Back Pain

Approximately 8 out of 10 people will experience the symptoms of back pain at least once in their lives. Bed rest used to be recommended immediately after a back injury; however this is no longer the case. Now it is recommended that you resume your daily activities as soon as possible after an injury and then after a few weeks, you start a program of gentle stretching and strengthening of the back muscles.

A comprehensive back rehabilitation program should consist of both stretching and strengthening the muscles. This should include the abdominal muscles as these muscles play an important role in stabilising the spine.

At Beachbox Physiotherapy we provide a structured transition program from an acute injury to a comprehensive rehabilitation program in our specialist gymnasium.

Recurrent Back Pain

The reason why people continue to experience recurrent back pain can be complex. There may be a mix of daily habits, work habits or spinal structural problems that contribute to their recurrent pain. Spinal rehabilitation re-builds muscle and helps the spinal joints become healthier through regular exercise. It is a scientifically sound and evidenced based method of managing recurrent back pain.

Long Term Back Pain Management

We all know that exercise should be part of our daily lives; however fitting it into our day and completing it without hurting our joints can be difficult. For busy people we provide a 30 minute express exercise program, supervised by a physiotherapist or an exercise scientist.

Don’t wait until you’re in persistent pain, start your spinal rehabilitation program at Beachbox Physiotherapy today.

Dry Needling

Dry needing is available at Beachbox Physiotherapy. It is excellent for the treatment of musculature injury. Dry Needling uses acupuncture needles that are inserted into “knots” in muscles. This can provide relief from chronically tight and painful muscles and joints. Dry needling should not be confused with Chinese acupuncture which can only be done by an acupuncturist who is registered with the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia.

How To Make The Most Of Your Physiotherapy Treatment

Physiotherapy treatment can be life changing, helping you recover from traumatic injuries, chronic pain and get you on the road to your best performance levels. Here are a few tips to make sure you get the most out of your physiotherapy treatment.

Wrist Sprains

Wrist sprains are a general term used to describe any injury to the wrist that doesn’t include a fracture. While this can indicate that they are not serious injuries, wrist sprains can be complicated injuries that require supervision and treatment to recover fully.

Osteoarthritis of the Knee

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease that affects almost all the joints of the body. The knees are some of the most commonly affected joints, with many people experiencing at least a small degree of osteoarthritis over the age of 40. The disease is characterized by degradation of the cartilage that lines the surfaces of the joint, growth of osteophytes or bony spurs, pain, stiffness and swelling.

Four Tips For Reducing Knee Pain

Knee pain comes in many forms with many different causes. While treatment for every person and condition will be different in each case, here are a few tips that may help to reduce knee pain throughout the day.

When Physiotherapy Treatment Doesn’t Work

We often hear from patients that they have put off treatment following an injury because they have previously tried physiotherapy and found that it didn’t work. Understandably, this can lead to a reluctance to invest time and money into future treatments. While there are never any guarantees in healthcare, in this article we highlight a few reasons why your treatment may not have worked in the past and why it may be worth trying again.

Adductor Tendinopathy

The adductor muscles are a group of five muscles located on the inside of the thigh that act to move the hip inwards or control hip movements outwards. These muscles also provide stability to the pelvis while standing, walking and running

Can Poor Balance Lead To Ankle Sprains?

Ankle sprains are one of the most common sporting injuries and most people have experienced one at least once in their lifetime. While they are common, this doesn’t lessen their negative impacts. Surprisingly, having poor balance might be increasing your risk of ankle sprains. Here we discuss a few facts about balance and what you can do to reduce your risk of ankle injuries.

Olecranon Bursitis

One bursa that is commonly affected is the olecranon bursa, which sits just over the hard bony process at the base of the elbow. Olecranon bursitis refers to inflammation of the bursa at this point and is a common condition, particularly in men between the ages of 30-60.

Four Surprising Causes Of Neck Pain

If you are experiencing regular neck pain that just won’t go away, it’s possible that parts of your daily routine are contributing without you realising. Here are a few common everyday activities that might be making your neck pain worse.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterised by widespread pain throughout the body along with fatigue, memory problems, sleep and mood disorders. Sufferers of fibromyalgia often spend years trying to find a diagnosis that fits their many symptoms and fluctuate between periods of having high energy and ‘crashes’ of fatigue and pain.

Remedial Massage

Remedial Massage also referred to as Deep Tissue Massage, is designed to increase the flow of blood and lymph, particularly in injured areas. It creates the conditions for the body’s return to normal health after injury. Remedial massage is also used for lifestyle conditions such as repetitive strain injury and back pain. Tenderness during the treatment indicates which muscles and tendons are injured. The massage therapist uses the patient’s feedback to pinpoint the damaged tissue and to regulate pressure.

Regular Remedial Massage can be of huge benefit to your body, relieving muscle tension and pain, improving joint mobility and posture, boosting immunity and reducing stress.

Our massage therapist uses a variety of remedial techniques in her treatments to assist clients with a range of issues such as:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sciatic pain
  • Headaches
  • Stress
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Soft tissue strains or injuries
  • Sports injuries
  • Overuse injuries
  • TMJ
Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine, where cups are placed on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. Cupping is used in conjunction with Remedial Massage to loosen facia, relax muscle tissue, assist with painand inflammation and increase blood and lymphatic flow

Pregnancy Massage

An enormous amount of stress and strain is placed upon your body during pregnancy. Massage can make a huge difference physically as well as mentally and emotionally. Pregnancy massage has many benefits for both mother and baby and can be performed from the 1st Trimester (with GP approval) all the way up to the due date.

Some of the benefits of prenatal massage are:

  • Lowering of stress hormones throughout the body.
  • Better sleep and circulation
  • Helps relieve cramping and restless legs
  • Improvement of muscle, nerve and joint pain.
  • Stimulates endorphin production
  • Reduction of swelling
  • Improvement in immune function
  • Increases blood and lymph circulation

Beachbox Group Physiotherapy

We use our knowledge in musculoskeletal injury and postural dysfunction to create a specific program for you. This requires an assessment with our physiotherapist which included a detailed physical history and examination. The physiotherapist then creates a program specific for you and ensures that you are safe and competent in it.

Do we use apparatus?

The Group Physio method seeks to develop controlled movement from a strong core and it does this by using a range of apparatus to guide and train the body.

Each piece of apparatus has its own repertoire of exercises and most of the exercises done on the various pieces of Group Physio apparatus are resistance training since they make use of springs to provide additional resistance. Using springs results in “progressive resistance”, meaning the resistance increases as the spring is stretched. The most widely used piece of apparatus, and probably the most important, is the Reformer, but other apparatus used in a Group Physio studio include the Cadillac (also called the Trapeze Table), the high (or electric) chair, the Wunda Chair, the baby Chair, and the Ladder Barrel, the Spine Corrector (Step Barrel) and small barrel.
