Meet Beautiful Baby Layla.

Layla was born with a rare liver disease called Biliary Artesia, which occurs in 1 in 18,000 infants.

Cells within the liver produce liquid called bile. Bile helps to digest fat. It also carries waste products from the liver to the intestines for excretion. This network of channels and ducts is called the biliary system. When the biliary system is working the way it should, it lets the bile drain from the liver into the intestines. When a baby has biliary atresia, bile flow from the liverLaylas cause 3 to the gallbladder is blocked. This causes the bile to be trapped inside the liver, quickly causing damage and scarring of the liver cells (cirrhosis), and eventually liver failure.

At 7 weeks old, Layla had a procedure, which involved attaching a loop of the small intestine to the liver, to aid in moving the bile away and into the intestine to remove it.

It would take 6-8 weeks to find out if it worked and unfortunately for Layla it didn’t, meaning she would need to have a liver transplant.

For 5-6 weeks, Layla and her mum, Aleisha, were based The Royal Children’s Hospital, Layla was battling a blood infection and wasn’t able to leave until after her liver transplant. Before her liver transplant she needed to gain some weight as she was so small. After a long struggle, she eventually hit 5kg, which is a huge achievement!

Then, finally Layal and her family received a phone call, saying they had a liver available for transplant. After 13 hours had passed, with updates from the nurses every hour, the transplant was all finished. During the surgery, Layla lost a lot of blood which meant they had to give her large amounts of fluids & Laylas cause 2replacement blood, which caused her to swell. Due to the swelling, they were unable to close her wound up. Two days after the transplant she went back into theatre to be closed up.

After a successful transplant, Layla is doing absolutely amazing! Her skin is white, her hair colour has changed to light brown, and you can finally see the whites of her eyes. Layla’s life has been saved by someone she has never met, they saved her life through their own generosity, giving her another chance at life.

The family of the little Frankston girl is hoping to raise awareness of the disease that kept her in hospital for months.

We want to show our support for Layla, and this cause, so, at Beachbox Seaford, we have now started a donation collection, which will be given to the grandfather (Terry) of baby Layla. Terry is a passionate, kind-hearted man, who has lots of love for granddaughter Layla, and has been a friend of ours at Beachbox for a long time. All the money collected will be donated towards The Royal Children’s Hospital or Liver Kids. Either way, the money raised will be used to help support those babies in serious need – babies like Layla.

We are now reaching out to our Beachbox family and community, and ask if you would like to be involved, simply drop in to see us in Seaford, where you can donate today. Any amount would be greatly appreciated – no matter how big or small.
